At Earth Rangers, we strongly believe in collaboration with industry as a necessary condition for achieving conservation success. We also believe in the importance of presenting a science based, balanced message to our members about the relationship between the environment, the economy and our own lifestyles. That’s why we’ve formed a new partnership with the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) to engage our members in learning about Canada’s forests and forestry sector.
In Canada we’re lucky to have 9% of the world’s forest cover, including our incredible boreal forest, which stretches all the way from British Columbia to Newfoundland and the Great Bear Rainforest, a globally unique temperate rainforest on the west coast. Being home to these international treasures comes with a great responsibility and an exciting opportunity to be a leader in forest conservation. Thankfully, Canada is already on its way, over 160 million hectares or 43% of the world’s certified forests are in Canada and annually the industry grows as many trees as it cuts down.
Forest certification provides consumers with confidence that the products they purchased have been harvested in a sustainable way, taking into consideration biodiversity, regeneration and social standards. In Canada there are 3 recognized standards: Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), with SFI being the largest in North America.
We can be proud of the fact that Canada retains nearly 90% of its original forest cover, while supporting a strong forest sector for over 100 years. As a way of giving back and in celebration of Canada 150, Earth Rangers and FPAC are supporting research to help determine the best management practices for moose- one of Canada’s most iconic forest-dwelling species.
