FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 4, 2011
On July 23, 2011 seventy-five international students aged 14-18 years old embarked on a journey to Reykjavik, Iceland to participate in Students on Ice Arctic Youth Expedition 2011.
Joey Loi, a passionate 17 year-old from Markham, Ontario who believes that young people must be active in shaping the world they live in, has been selected to participate in the expedition. Loi, who is dedicated to educating and inspiring children to create change, has partnered with Earth Rangers to share his experience with over 96,000 children who are Earth Rangers members by blogging live from the expedition’s ship.
“I am humbled to be a part of this expedition, and I am very grateful to share my experiences with Earth Rangers members” says Joey Loi, “My goal on this journey is to become a more effective environmental leader so I will be better equipped to address ecological issues in my hometown of Markham, Ontario. By fully immersing myself in the natural environment and by forming relationships and connections with the people I meet, I will not only be able to understand the issues that challenge our planet, but also to create and contribute to solutions that will make positive impacts both locally and globally.”
Students on Ice Arctic Youth Expedition 2011 runs from July 23 to August 7, 2011 and is one of the most comprehensive youth expeditions ever undertaken to the Arctic. The ship-based journey will explore Iceland, southern Greenland, the north shore of Labrador and the northern reaches of Nunavik. Students will travel on this transformative adventure together with a team of 35 world-renowned scientists, historians, artists, explorers, educators, leaders, innovators and polar experts. Students will develop the knowledge, skills, perspectives and practices that will help them to be Arctic ambassadors and environmentally responsible citizens.
“Earth Rangers is dedicated to educating, inspiring and enabling children and their families to take action to reduce biodiversity loss and to adopt more sustainable behaviors” says Mark Northwood, President and Co-CEO of Earth Rangers. “We are pleased to share Joey Loi’s Student’s on Ice Artic Youth Expedition experience with our members as we believe Joey’s story will not only be educational, but will also inspire us all to take direct action to protect the environment.”
Throughout his journey Loi will share stories, experiences as well as photos and videos from the expedition on Earth Rangers’ Wild Wire, an environmental blog where children can get facts, ideas, meet animals and be inspired to make a difference.
