Do you love learning about animals, finding out how things work, doing experiments or even building things? Well, you just might be a STEMologist.
Ok, maybe we made that word up, but STEM is a real thing. No, we aren’t talking about part of a plant. This is a different type of STEM, one that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
Now, we’re sure you’ve learned some of this in school, but what if we told you that you’ve probably seen STEM in action? Have you ever…
- Made a birdfeeder or bee condo?
- Kept track of animals or plants you see around you?
- Done a taste test or designed your own experiment?
- Participated in a science fair?
These are just a few examples of how you can use STEM but the list goes on and on!
Making a real impact with STEM
By combining the knowledge and skills from all four areas of STEM, we can find new ways of thinking, problem-solving, and inventing that can help not only our local communities but the planet too!
Scientists, like the ones we work with at Earth Rangers, record what they see, run experiments, gather evidence and help us learn what’s actually happening on our planet. This data can then be used by engineers and technologists to design and build programs that help solve our biggest problems.
Without STEM, we wouldn’t have smart thermostats that make us more energy efficient, GPS collars that are used to track animals or even many of the things we use every day like our phones and computers.
Is there STEM in your future?
YES! Scientists, mathematicians, engineers or technologists aren’t the only ones that use STEM. If you dream of being a Veterinarian, a zookeeper, someone who makes laws that help protect the planet, or even an Earth Rangers’ animal trainer, then you definitely need to stick with STEM.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math is for everyone, no matter where you live, how old you are or who you are. You can be anything you want to be.
We think STEM is really cool so we’re putting together some stories that will help you see STEM’s coolness too! From protecting rhinos in Africa to cleaning up our oceans and everything in between, stay tuned to learn all the ways STEM is being used to help the planet!
What are some of the ways you use STEM in your life? Become an Earth Ranger and join us in protecting our planet!
